Breakpoint and Desperate Housewives

Breakpoint with Chuck Colson
I do like his comment on "This is obviously the stuff of soap operas, yet there's an important, if inadvertent, cultural point made: It really is difficult for American women to see marriage and motherhood as a calling these days."
I also agree that the women in this are seeking meaning. I would argue that the show does in fact point in directions that are healthy in ways only hollywood could. however it's message is not about christ... there is a lot of truth spoken in this show that we can claim and understand.
and.
using Desperate housewives as an arguement for homeschooling seems laughable and ridiculous. "Housewives" show women desperate to survive and find meaning and authenticity in a world that is more and more pretend. The pace of life and mountains of unwritten expectations placed on these women and their lack of support is what is killing the characters in this TV show. It's a hit for a reason. I think women can relate. I see in my neighborhood. The shiney happy people, who live perfect lives. Who are prompt in mowing and setting up and taking down the appropriate seasonal holiday outdoor decor.
I also do not claim to be an expert.
I just find it interested that a Southern Baptist Man is commenting on this show. Talk about taking the plank out of your own eye! Any man associating with a church declaring the "utter servitude of women to men", then giving women advice about homeschooling, which is unformed and irresponsible.
Desperate housewives is a cry for help to me. It is a cry for the church to understand where many women are coming from and tell them the truth. They are not alone. They don't have to listen to the voices of our culture that tell them their gardening wardrobe needs to match their rubber grip on their pruning shears and that they don't need to always serve cuisine.
But my question is... will the church respond? To counter a culture of aloneness it means we have to let our guard down. It means we must not live in isolation ourselves. It means that real community is a large part of what salvation is to them.
Just a thought or two....
